A letter from the ENFL Division Chair, David Heldebrant

Dear colleagues,

Thank you again for letting me serve you as the 2019 chair for the Energy and Fuels Division. The executive committee and I are looking forward to the upcoming 258 ACS National Meeting in San Diego,

CA. Our Program Chair Professor Hongfei Lin and Program Chair

elect Dr. Asanga Padmaperuma have been busy in developing a diverse and exciting technical program that reflects hot research areas and the best technical work in Energy and Fuels. We have a lot of events and social and networking opportunities slated for the meeting, and we encourage all members to participate.

As always, our program meeting to discuss focus and symposia for upcoming meetings is open to all members to provide feedback and suggestions. That meeting will be Sunday, August 25, at 1pm in the Manchester Grand Hyatt’s “America’s Cup A/B” ballroom.

Our division’s Business Meeting/social (free lunch!) and Student Poster Award Session will be held

Monday August 26, at 11:30-1 pm (San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall A).

Also, our Division will be participating in Division Row at the Sci-Mix on Monday, August 26, at 8-10pm, at the SD Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B.

Finally, we hope that you may join us for our Division Dinner Tuesday, August 27 at 6:30-9pm at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, Liberty Station, 2816 Historic Decatur Rd, San Diego, CA 92106. The dinner will be open for networking with draft beer, event wines, outdoor games and a “Beer Specialist” from Stone to discuss tasting notes and the process of making beer at one of America’s largest craft breweries. First 75 attendees will also receive a 1L commemorative growler from Stone. Tickets cost $65 and are all-inclusive (sold on ACS registration site, or from an ENFL executive member). Get your tickets before they sellout!

I’m looking forward to another productive meeting and hope to see you at one of our events in San Diego!

Kind regards,

Dave Heldebrant

Update for the Upcoming ACS Council Meeting

San Diego, California, August 28th, 2019

Submitted by Joe D. Allison, ENFL Councilor, 2018-2020 on August 12, 2019

Several Councilor’s Action votes will take place during this meeting.

Action items:

  1. Election to Council Committees. Three elections will be held to select members for the Council’s committees that require members to be elected. Most committees have appointed members. Five members for each committee will be selected from a slate of ten candidates. The committees with their respective candidates are:
    1. Council Policy Committee. George M. Bodner; James C. Carver; Dee Ann Casteel; Kenneth P. Fivizzani; Anne M. Gaffney; Joseph A. Heppert; Lydia E. M. Hines; Will

E. Lynch; Sally B. Peters; Margaret J. Schooler.

    1. Committee on Committee. Satinder Ahuja; Lisa M. Balbes; D. Richard Cobb; Harry

J. Elston; Emilio X. Esposito; Sarah M. Mullins; Jason E. Ritchie; Susan M. Schelble; Andrea B. Twiss-Brooks; Stephanie J. Watson.

    1. Committee on Nominations and Elections. V. Dean Adams; Mark A. Benvenuto; Michelle V. Buchannan; Charles E. Cannon; Alan B. Cooper; Alan M. Ehrlich; Alan A Hazari; Amber S. Hinkle; Thomas H. Lane; Joseph P. Stoner.
  1. Recommendation for Continuation of Selected Committees. The Committee on Committees will seek Council approval for the continuance of the Committee on International Activities and the Committee on Professional Training.
  2. Realignment of Electoral Districts. The Committee on Nominations and Elections (N&E) is responsible for reviewing annually the distribution of member population within the six electoral districts. The districts are required to each be within ten percent of one-sixth of the total membership to assure equitability between districts. N&E has determined that District III has fallen below this requirement. To alleviate and correct this N&E is asking Council approval to move the Pittsburgh Local Section from District II to District III.
  3.  Approval for “The Chemical Professional’s Code of Conduct”. The Committee on

Economic and Professional Affairs (CEPA) is asking Council approval for an updated “Code of Conduct”. Basically, it says to be a good person, be nice to others and don’t do anything

unethical or illegal. And, oh yeah, environment stuff.

  1. Petition to Charter an International Chemical Sciences Chapter. Vote on approval to allow formation of the Georgia International Chemical Sciences Chapter. I didn’t know Atlanta was in another country. Oh, the Republic of Georgia. Never mind.
  2. Council Consideration for By-Law Changes on Membership. Proposed changes to ACS Bylaws that govern membership and dues will be presented to Council for their consideration by the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws. The changes may then be presented at the Spring meeting in 2020 for vote barring any significant rework. The changes strive to streamline and expedite the ability to attract and keep members to offset the declining member roles for the Society.
