Contribution to the science/profession: Recognized for significant contributions to coal science, biomass conversion, and carbon materials, particularly the fate of nitrogen in coal conversion, experiments, and modeling of biomass pyrolysis, multifunctional carbons, and sorbents.

Contribution to the ACS community: Held leadership positions (Chair, Program Secretary, Trustee) in the Division of Fuel Chemistry, now the Division of Energy and Fuels. Presided over Division programming and membership revitalization and helped strengthen Trust Fund sustainability.
