Contribution to the science/profession: Served as Director of the Argonne National Laboratory, where achievements included dramatically increasing funding and coupling basic research with commercial development. Co-founded and serves as President of the Chicago Council on Science and Technology.

Contribution to the ACS community: Developed and implemented a number of outreach programs as Argonne National Laboratory Director and as President of the Chicago Council on Science and Technology. Served in many leadership roles, including Chair, for the Division of Petroleum Chemistry (now Energy and Fuels) and on the Advisory Board of Chemical & Engineering News.
